The year is 1507, and Gideon Cahill has been searching for a cure for the Black Plague. And while he didn't discover one, he did invent something else: an amazing formula with 39 ingredients that will strengthen a person beyond his or her wildest dreams. But his so-called friend, Lord Damien Vesper, finds out about his research and wants the power for himself. He desires it so badly, in fact, that he is willing to do anything to get it, including murder.
Gideon does the only thing he can think of to save the formula and his family. He divides it into four parts and distributes it to his bickering children: Jane, Katherine, Thomas and Luke. They then scatter to different parts of the world, running for their lives from the dastardly Lord Vesper. Gideon's wife, Olivia, is given the job of protecting his family ring --- a ring with a deep secret. But Olivia has another secret, one she never gets the chance to share with the rest of the family: She's pregnant with their fifth child!
The year is 1526, and Madeleine Cahill has had an unusual 19 years of life. Her mother, Olivia, has raised her with training in apothecary, self-defense and other skills, all under a false name in order to keep three promises: to keep the family ring safe, to keep the secret of the 39 clues, and to reunite her bickering family. But when Lord Vesper discovers their location, they must run for their lives again. Madeleine then learns that her older brother is the adviser to King Henry VIII, and she jumps at the chance to try and reunite with him. So she travels to London, with Lord Vesper on her tail.
The year is 1942, and Grace Cahill is 13 years old. Her mother recently died giving birth to her baby brother, causing her father to wander off in his grief. And since neither the nanny nor her older sister, Beatrice, wants anything to do with the new baby, Grace has cared for Fiske by herself. Grace knows about her family secrets, and has even had some special training, like learning Morse code and taking flying lessons. Then one night she stumbles upon an urgent message to her father about a ring. With no way to contact him, she decides to personally deliver the message to General Patton stationed in North Africa, with the Vespers on her tail.
It's present day, and Dan and Amy Cahill are back in Boston after having just experienced the five most exciting --- and deadly --- weeks of their lives hunting for the clues. But after four months of mundane life, Dan is bored. He won't be for long, though. Their guardians, Uncle Fiske and Nellie, had hoped to give them more time to rest, but time has run out and the Vespers are getting too close to the ring. So Dan, Amy and Uncle Fiske travel to Switzerland to retrieve the ring, with the Vespers on their tail.
Amy Cahill says it best --- "It's not over --- and fans of The 39 Clues will be thrilled with the extension of this series that begins with a trip to the past. Four of the original authors worked together on this 11th book, giving it a clever and unique layout with each taking one chapter. The four chapters take a look at separate time periods in the Cahill family history. Rick Riordan handles the story of the Cahills, who started it all with the 39-ingredient formula; Peter Lerangis reveals Madeleine's story; Gordon Korman delivers one of Grace's adventures; and Jude Watson catches fans back up to Dan and Amy in the present day, and the start of their trials against the Vespers. All four authors have distinguishing styles and the ability to write vividly descriptive lines.
